Password Requirements

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ Password Requirements 

  1. Password needs to be at least 12 characters in length
  2. It cannot contain spaces
  3. It cannot contain your name
  4. It must contain at least one each of three of these four types of characters:
    1. Numbers: 0-9
    2. Upper case English letters: A-Z
    3. Lower case English letters: a-z
    4. Special Characters: ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - _ = + [ { ] } \ | ; : ' " , < . > / ? ` ~
  5. It must not contain your PID or your PID typed backwards
  6. You cannot resume any of the 5 most recent Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ passwords you have created
  7. **Reminder: Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ passwords expire every 365 days.

 

Instructions for Faculty and Staff

There are two methods to change your password:

  1. To change your password via Outlook Web App:
    1. Go to 
    2. Click on Options in the upper right hand part of the window
    3. Click Change Password
    4. Enter your new password and confirm that it meets the above criteria
  2. To change your password via your Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ desktop or laptop:
    1. You will need to be on the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ network, either hardwired at your desk or on VPN off campus
    2. Hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete
    3. Select Change a Password
    4. Enter your current password
    5. Enter your new password and confirm that it meets the above criteria

 

Virginia Tech PID (VT PID) Password Requirements (Virginia Campus students only)

  1. It must be at least 8 and not more than 15 characters
  2. It may not contain spaces
  3. It must contain ALL four types of characters:
    1. Numbers: 0-9
    2. Upper case English letters: A-Z
    3. Lower case English letters: a-z
    4. Special Characters: ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - _ = + [ { ] } \ | ; : ' " , < . > / ? ` ~
  4. It must not contain a dictionary word found in a standard English dictionary or a common noun, such as the name of a town or state, that is greater than 3 letters spelled correctly or backwards
  5. It must not contain your PID or your PID typed backwards
  6. It must not contain a keyboard sequence of more than 3 characters such as: asdf, qwer, zxcv, poiu, lkjh.
  7. It must not match your last 4 passwords or your current password
